‘Yes, I am’, Titi said weakly. ‘Look, Bola, I can’t talk to you right now. Please, I will call you back later. Thank you for understanding.’
‘You said you would come over this evening; we still have some things to sort out. Anyway, I don’t even have time for this mood swing. I need you to send a picture of the cake design so I can get the exact colour combination for the game cards.’
‘Okay, I will send it. Thank you. Bola’ Titi ended the call.
Titi’s Birthday
‘Clear the road for the birthday girl!’
‘Happy Birthday Best Girl!’
‘Today we feast!’
‘All roads lead to the Williams’ residence!’
Bola woke up to see the messages pouring in on the group for her best friend. She turned her phone over and closed her eyes. She was hurt that her friend was still giving her the silent treatment. It was more irritating that she spoke to everyone else but not Bola.
Why should I even go for the birthday? I don’t want anyone to make me sad, abeg. Bola thought to herself.
She had called Titi several times the previous day, but either her calls were not returned, or Titi responded very coldly. The last time her best friend acted this way was when Tunde broke up with her.
But that was a long time ago, ehn. Or could it be her parents fighting? But she said things were back to normal na. Whatever it is anyway, she is not being fair about it at all.
Titi’s Residence
It was 9 am, the best day of the year, but when Titi woke up that morning, she felt sick. Her father had moved some of his things out yesterday, contrary to what her mum had told her, and she felt her world had come crashing down.
‘Happy Birthday, Titi,’ her dad entered her room with a gift, and sat by her bed. ‘I want you to know that I love you so much. I didn’t agree with your mum to tell you before your birthday. It was meant to be after, bec–’
‘What difference would it have made? I would have still found out anyway. Why are you moving out so soon? What’s the rush?’ Titi shoved the gift under her bed. She wasn’t interested.
‘Oh, erm, I am travelling for a few weeks. It’s work-related, and I figured by the time I get back, your mum may have decided to start dating again, so I didn’t want to be a bother.’ Dare was sorry this was happening.
‘Dating ke? Who is she dating? Who told you she wants to date anyone?’
